LAS VEGAS—Promising to take the first few rounds really slow for anybody who still needed to get their bearings, entrants in the World Series of Poker reportedly began the tournament this week by playing a full hand face-up so everyone could learn the rules. “Okay, show of hands—how many of you have played poker before?” said tournament dealer Dan Chambers, who quickly googled “rules of Texas Hold ’em,” pulled up a chart that ranked poker hands, and passed his phone around the table. “Okay, you’re basically turning over different cards at different times, with some cards being better than others. The best hand is called a royal flush, so if you get that, you definitely win. Does that make sense? I want to make sure everyone understands, because there are millions and millions of dollars on the line here. Which reminds me—does anyone remember how much money each of these chips represents? I always get them confused.” At press time, sources confirmed the baffled entrants had thrown up their hands in frustration, said the game was too much to remember, and decided to just play Go Fish instead.
