Scientific Journal Releases List Of Year's Top 100 Compounds

CAMBRIDGE, MA—The Atlantic Journal Of Computational Chemistry released its ranking of the top 100 compounds of the year Tuesday, with H2O topping the list, and C12H22O11, NaCl, CaCO3, and Fe2O3 appearing in the top 10.”Some people griped because hydrogen-, carbon-, and oxygen-based compounds made up more than 75 percent of the list,” said Dr. Timothy Grant, one of 50 top scientists polled for the list. “But the influence these elements have on the chemical world cannot be denied.” The list, which appeared in the magazine’s December issue, has stirred up controversy among chemists for excluding the lesser-known but vital compound zinc sulfate heptahydrate.
