Making IndyCar Racing Safer

In response to the tragic death of Dan Wheldon, IndyCar Series officials are considering major safety changes for next year’s races.

Strict no-passing rule

Add fuel tank to cars so drivers no longer have to sit in pool of methanol

New rule limiting pileups to 14 cars

Improve soft-wall safety measures by replacing all track walls with four-deep line of fans holding hands

Requiring paramedic to sit on the back of each car

Stop racing on those crowded 1/16th-mile ovals

9-foot-thick helmets

Perhaps put an end to the $5 million bonus for creating unbelievably dangerous situations
